Linda Audio has introduced Digimorph, a complimentary experimental synth VST tailored for Windows users.
Synth VSTs frequently draw heavy inspiration from existing hardware instruments and, in numerous instances, directly replicate them, similar to Vavra, which emulates the Waldorf MicroQ.
It’s not solely free synths that often tread the emulation route; releases like Baby Audio’s BA-1 follow the same path. For those unfamiliar, BA-1 replicates the Yamaha CS-01 (1982), and it has become a staple since its release.
The mention of emulations arises because, despite the affection for a good emulation, there’s a refreshing allure to something novel, which Digimorph aspires to be.
Digimorph is an innovative digital synthesizer that forges new sonic landscapes by blending additive and subtractive synthesis with a robust modulation matrix.
At the core of Digimorph lies the additive non-band limited oscillator, boasting three unique modes: monophonic, polyphonic, and live-arp.
In polyphonic mode, Digimorph supports up to sixteen voices. The live-arp mode automatically generates an arpeggiated sequence based on the notes played, as typically anticipated.
The interface’s color scheme may evoke memories of the Yamaha PSR 3, exuding a vibrant, attention-grabbing aesthetic. However, despite its initial bold appearance, it offers a coherent structure upon closer inspection.
The color-coded sections each serve a distinct purpose.
The yellow section encompasses traditional oscillator parameters such as Pitch, Fine-Tune, Amp, Pan, Glide, and Spread.
In the violet section, users can manipulate the additive synthesis aspect, adjusting harmonic gains and other parameters like Phase Shift and Harmonic Slope.
The orange section houses controls for Pulse Width, Wave Shaper, Ring Mod, and Ring Speed. Meanwhile, the grey section provides more aggressive options, including bit rate division, feedback introduction, and random pitch variation.
Digimorph offers extensive modulation options with two ADSR envelopes and two LFOs. Each oscillator is complemented by a multi-mode, state-variable resonant filter. Additionally, users can enhance their sounds with various effects such as Chorus, Delay, and Reverb.
With 200 presets at your disposal, ranging from ethereal pads to chiptune leads, Digimorph exudes a raw, dystopian vibe that’s undeniably intriguing.
Digimorph is available in VST2 format for Windows.
