Developer Flowsonics has just unveiled their latest creation: Zipper, a free delay plugin compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems.
In a market brimming with a plethora of delay options, Zipper stands out as a unique offering. Unlike its counterparts, which boast an array of controls catering to diverse musical scenarios, Zipper is tailored specifically for sound design aficionados rather than serving as a generic workhorse.
While Zipper excels at producing zipper noises, its utility extends beyond this niche. With some creative experimentation, users can achieve intriguing results suitable for various sound design applications, depending on the input material.
Despite its modest control set, Zipper delivers precisely the effects it promises. The primary parameters revolve around “Snap,” featuring a mode selector for choosing between different lines and a snap speed control dictating the velocity of the effect’s transition.
Moving on to the Control tab, users encounter a single but crucial parameter: “Zipper.” This knob governs the timing of the delay line, offering flexibility in fine-tuning the desired effect. Interestingly, leaving it at its default setting upon instantiation often yields satisfactory outcomes.
Completing the control suite is the Output tab, housing parameters such as “Recovery” and a mix knob. The recovery setting determines how quickly the sound returns to its original pitch, while the mix knob facilitates seamless automation for building tension or enhancing transitions within musical compositions.
While personally not in dire need of zipper sound effects in my own musical endeavors, the distinctiveness of Zipper certainly piques curiosity. With its focus squarely aimed at delivering on its unique promise, this plugin offers a specialized tool for crafting bespoke sound effects, rather than conventional melodic applications.
Considering its unconventional nature and dedicated functionality, Zipper presents a compelling proposition, especially given its free price tag. For those inclined towards experimentation and seeking to expand their sound design arsenal, Zipper is undoubtedly worth exploring.
