Developer Purrfect Audio has just dropped Paw Control, an innovative free MIDI plugin designed exclusively for Windows systems.
When I first stumbled upon Paw Control, I admit, I was scratching my head. Initially tagged as a VST3i instrument by Reaper, it had me fooled. But as I delved deeper, it revealed itself to be something far more intriguing than just another synthesizer.

Upon opening the plugin, you’re greeted by an adorable feline companion and a set of controls that may seem a tad enigmatic at first glance. The letters ‘R’, ‘D’, and ‘U’ adorn these controls, each holding the key to a unique function.
At its core, Paw Control functions as a MIDI filtering utility with a twist. Think of it as a musical sandbox, where the whimsical meanderings of a curious cat inspire delightful chord progressions.
Drawing inspiration from the playful randomness of a cat’s paw dancing across piano keys, the developers have crafted a tool that injects a delightful dose of unpredictability into your compositions.
‘R’, ‘D’, and ‘U’ determine the range of random values injected into your sequences. ‘R’ ventures into the realm of chaos at higher settings, while ‘D’ and ‘U’ add octaves below and above your current key range, respectively. These controls work harmoniously to infuse your sequences with a captivatingly eccentric charm.
For those who prefer to keep their musical experiments self-contained, Paw Control also features an internal sine synth. While lacking in extensive control options, it serves as a quirky addition to the plugin’s repertoire.
