Effective FX Drops FREE Experimental Modulation Effect Plugin ‘Poltergeist’

Effective FX, an independent and innovative audio tech studio based in Baltimore, Maryland, has released an intriguing new plugin called Poltergeist. Available for free on both macOS and Windows, Poltergeist is a bold experimental modulation effect that pushes the boundaries of audio manipulation. Designed to generate complex, fractal-like phasing patterns, this plugin invites exploration and rewards creativity, capable of producing anything from gentle enhancements to wildly unpredictable sonic transformations.

Features

Poltergeist stands out by offering a dynamic range of modulation possibilities. Whether you’re looking to add depth and texture to your tracks or completely reimagine traditional analog effects, this plugin has you covered.

Key Modulation Stages:

  1. Dr (Drive): Serves as the foundation, stretching and amplifying the signal for the subsequent stages. With Feedback and Delay controls, it creates the basis for eerie, echo-like effects.
  2. P (Phase): Shifts the phase of the audio and provides controls for Range, Period, Center Frequency, and Layers. The Range parameter determines the extent of phase modulation in octaves, while the Center Frequency can be adjusted between 20 Hz and 20 kHz for precise tweaking.
  3. C/a and C/b (Complexity): These two parallel stages add layers of complexity to the sound. Each offers Delay, Feedback, Mod Depth, and Mod Period controls, allowing you to shape the modulation’s intricacy. You can bypass one or both stages for a clearer understanding of the earlier modulation effects. The Mod Period setting, which ranges from 10 milliseconds to four seconds, introduces everything from subtle tonal shifts to evolving, textured soundscapes.
  4. Tx (Texture): This final stage has a significant impact on the overall output, except for the Drive stage. It features an OSC button that enables or disables LFO modulation. Disabling the LFO results in cleaner, more controlled effects, while enabling it unlocks advanced stereo panning and textural possibilities. The Feedback Texture control allows further customization by sharpening or softening the sound’s texture.

Creative Applications:

Poltergeist is a versatile tool designed for use on a wide range of instruments and sounds, including synths, guitars, bass, drums, vocals, and even full mixes. Its developer, Ross Wallgren, has shared several demonstration videos showing how Poltergeist can enhance hi-hats or create transformative effects across entire tracks.

System Requirements

Poltergeist is available in AU and VST3 formats and is compatible with both macOS and Windows operating systems.
